Education of the female child for the first time in Kerala and probably in India, was launched by Mrs. Dorothea Baker wife of Rev. Henry Baker (Sr.), one of the early missionaries of CMS. She took the first step in this direction by starting to teach, at her residence, the three R’s to a group of six girls in 1820. From this humble beginning came out the Baker School, which was shifted to its present site "The Baker Hill", a place in the heart of Kottayam town in 1865. This was further upgraded as a High School in 1900 and later as a Higher Secondary School.
Baker College For Women is a giant step forward to offer higher education to women with the assurance to maintain the tradition, spirit and quality of ‘Baker Institutions’ and to create a new vibrancy in the area of higher education. The college offers her students a transformative educational experience by clinging on to the pioneer and inventive skills and drills to empower a heterogeneous society.
The sanctioning of Baker College for Women in 2014, was a highlight of the Bicentenary celebrations of the landing of CMS Missionaries in Kottayam and the beginning of Women's Education in Kerala. Functioning of the College started with blessings of Most Rev. Thomas K. Oommen, then Manager of the College and the Deputy Moderator of Church of South India. This was followed by the inauguration of the College by Dr. Sheena Shukkur, Former Pro Vice Chancellor of Mahatma Gandhi University, release of the College Logo by Bishop and the launch of its website by Smt. Nirmala Jimmy, the Zilla Panchayat President. The first graduation ceremony of the College was held on 1st March 2017, followed by a lecture featuring the life and contributions of its founder Ms. Amelia Dorothea Baker. The first "Ms. Baker Memorial lecture" titled "Malayali Women Today", was delivered by Dr. J. Devika, Associate Professor, Centre for Development Studies, Thiruananthapuram.
Year 2018, saw the College being conferred with the "Consumer Protection Award", by the Consumer Protection Council of Kerala.
"Metanoia", the first College Magazine, was released in the academic year 2018 - 19.
A shift from off line to online classes owing to the pandemic in the next two years, was challenging. The College charted a new road map for its future in 2021 - 22. That involved the addition of B Sc. Psychology Programme in the curriculum, introduction of student feedback mechanism, conduct of the first Staff tour and the first Alumni meet of the College, Giving shape to the first College handbook and attaining cent percent placement of the 2022-23 passout students of BCA. And, the saga continues......
